College basketball: Florida State upends No. 21 Florida

Dwayne Bacon scored 24 points, Terrence Mann added 16 and Florida State held on to beat Florida, 83-79, on Sunday in Tallahassee.

Bacon scored nine points during a 15-4 run early in the second half that helped the Seminoles (10-1) take control after it was tied at 38.

Florida State led by 13 midway through the second half before the Gators (7-3) started to slowly chip away. Florida used a 14-5 run to get within three, but could not get closer.

Kasey Hill scored a career-high 21 points for Florida, and KeVaughn Allen added 15.

No. 6 Kentucky 96, Hofstra 73: Malik Monk scored 20 points, Isaiah Briscoe had 19 and the Wildcats took control with a 26-3 in middle of the game in the Brooklyn Hoops Winter Festival at Barclays Center. De’Aaron Fox had 15 points and Bam Adebayo added 14 for Kentucky (9-1). The Wildcats closed the first half on a 12-0 run and opened the second with a 14-3 spurt to go ahead 62-36 with 16 minutes to play. The Pride (6-5), who came in having won four of five, stayed with the Wildcats for 16 minutes, trailing 36-33 with 4 minutes left in the first half. Deron Powers had 18 points for Hofstra in the first meeting between the schools.

at No. 7 North Carolina 73, Tennesee 71: Justin Jackson scored the go-ahead basket with 2:14 left to help the Tar Heels from 15 points down. Freshman Brandon Robinson added a key tip-in with 52.4 seconds left for the Tar Heels (10-1). Tennessee (4-4) had a last chance to tie, but Tony Bradley Jr. blocked Lamonte Turner’s drive. North Carolina shot just 40%, with Jackson managing seven points on three-for-15 shooting. Sophomore Kenny Williams III had 12 points, while Nate Britt had 11 points, seven assists and five steals in place of point guard Joel Berry II, who missed his second straight with an ankle injury. Robert Hubbs III led Tennessee with 21 points.

at No. 12 St. Mary’s 84, UC Irvine 53: Jock Landale had 15 points and seven rebounds, Evan Fitzner added a season-high 12 points and Saint Mary’s bounced back from its first loss of the season. St. Mary’s (7-1) was crisp offensively most of the game and shot 56.3% from the floor, a vast improvement from two nights earlier when the Gaels went 16 of 51 in a 65-51 loss to Texas-Arlington. Eyassu Workue scored 14 points for the Anteaters (5-6).

at No. 24 Oregon 63, Alabama 56: Tyler Dorsey scored 19 points and Dylan Ennis hit the tiebreaking 3-pointer as the shot clock expired to help the Ducks win their sixth in a row and 31st consecutive at home. Dillon Brooks and Chris Boucher added 10 points each for Oregon (8-2). Donta Hall led the Crimson Tide (4-4) with 14 points.

at San Diego 77, UC Santa Barbara 68: Brett Bailey scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds, Frank Ryder added 16 points and the Toreros (5-5) won their third game in a row. Gabe Vincent scored 23 points for the Gauchos (1-6), who were 0 for 10 from three-point range in the second half.

Women

at No. 9 UCLA 84, Michigan 64: Monique Billings and Jordin Canada each had double-doubles, leading UCLA to the victory. Billings had 19 points and a season-high 16 rebounds, while Canada had 16 points and a career-high 14 assists. Kelli Hayes added 16 points. The Bruins (7-1) extended their home winning streak to 18 in a row dating to last season. Kysre Gondrezick scored 18 points for Michigan (8-3), and Hallie Thome had 15.
