Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies: Ria Antonia wins on DQ; horse dies

The first Breeders’ Cup race of the day was filled with controversy and heartbreak.

She’s a Tiger beat Ria Antonia by a nose to seemingly win the $2-million Juvenile Fillies race Saturday at Santa Anita. But the stewards flashed the inquiry sign having seen She’s a Tiger, with Gary Stevens aboard, lug out in deep stretch and make contact with Ria Antonia. About 10 minutes later the results were reversed with She’s a Tiger was dropped to second.

The move was met with much displeasure with the crowd as a 5-1 horse was supplanted an entry that 32-1 horse, meaning much fewer winning tickets.

Ria Antonia, ridden by Javier Castellano, paid $66.60, $29.80 and $17.40. She’s a Tiger returned $6.40 and $4.80. Rosalind, who came roaring on the inside at the end, paid $6.80 to show.

The long wait took everyone’s mind off the horrific breakdown of Secret Compass on the far turn. The horse was in third on the inside rail when it appeared she broke a front leg, sending jockey John Velazquez forward to the dirt.

Velazquez was taken to the hospital. A track official said that he was OK. Secret Compass, trained by Bob Baffert, was euthanized on the track.
