Gary Carter’s emotional final at-bat [video]
Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter, who died Thursday at 57, was one of the best clutch players of all time.
Never was that on display as much as his final at-bat in the majors. Carter had returned to the team he started with, the Montreal Expos, for his final season.
His final game came on Sept. 27, 1992. In the seventh inning of a scoreless game against the Chicago Cubs, Carter lined an 0-2 pitch over the right fielder’s head to score Larry Walker with what turned out to be the only run of the game. Carter got a lengthy standing ovation from the Montreal crowd. You will get goosebumps while watching it.
Oh, and the right fielder Carter lined the ball over? Andre Dawson, his longtime Expos teammate.
If you need more evidence of his clutch ability, think back to 1986, when Carter started the game-winning rally against the Boston Red Sox in Game 6 of the World Series.
But Dodgers fans remember Game 1 of the 1988 NLCS, when Carter hit a looper that just eluded Dodgers center fielder John Shelby to score two runs off the unbeatable Orel Hershiser, leading to the Mets’ Game 1 victory.
Rest in peace, Gary Carter.
