Denny Hamlin wins pole for NASCAR Sprint Cup race in Fontana

Denny Hamlin on Friday won the pole position for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana.

Hamlin, already a winner this season at Phoenix earlier this month, turned a lap of 186.403 mph in his No. 11 Toyota on the two-mile Fontana track to capture the first starting spot for Joe Gibbs Racing.

“We have speed this weekend,” Hamlin said. “Everything kind of worked out in our favor.”

Gibbs teammate Kyle Busch qualified second for Sunday’s race at 185.534 mph in his No. 18 Toyota.

Veteran Mark Martin will start third in a Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota and current Cup points leader Greg Biffle qualified fourth in his No. 16 Ford for Roush Fenway Racing.

Elsewhere in the 43-car field, defending race winner Kevin Harvick qualified seventh, reigning Cup champion Tony Stewart was ninth, five-time champion Jimmie Johnson was 10th and Dale Earnhardt Jr. qualified 14th.
