Raiders rookie D.J. Hayden undergoes abdominal surgery

Cornerback D.J. Hayden, drafted 12th overall by the Oakland Raiders last month, has been in a Bay Area hospital since late last week, recovering from abdominal surgery that is expected to keep him out of action until training camp, according to Raiders General Manager Reggie McKenzie.

Relaying information that was told to him by McKenzie, a Raiders spokesman said Hayden’s surgery was to remove scar tissue that formed in the wake of a life-saving surgery the player underwent last November. According to the spokesman, doctors do not believe the most recent issue is an indication anything is seriously wrong with Hayden.

Dr. Walt Lowe, Hayden’s team physician at the University of Houston, did not perform the latest procedure but told The Times the information he has received is that the issue is “not heart-related.”

Hayden will not participate in the rest of the Raiders’ off-season workouts, some of which take place this week, but the team expects him to be back for the start of training camp in late July.

There is no immediate timetable for Hayden’s release from the hospital, the team spokesman said.

Regardless, any type of medical issue with Hayden is alarming, in light of what he went through last fall. He collided with a University of Houston teammate on Nov. 6, and sustained a torn inferior vena cava -- the vein that carries blood from the lower body back to the heart. There is no record of that type of injury occurring on a sports field, and it most often is a result of motor-vehicle accidents or battlefield incidents.

Doctors say 95% of people who suffer such an injury die before they reach the hospital.

Hayden underwent emergency surgery and, in the months that followed, made a recovery many people consider miraculous.
