Breakers still own league

The Laguna Beach High girls’ tennis team has cruised to victory in the first two weeks of the Orange Coast League season.

Tuesday at the Alta Laguna Park tennis courts, the host Breakers added Saddleback to their list of league victims by shutting down the Roadrunners, 18-0.

Singles wins at the No. 1 line came from Natasha Keces (6-0) and Nicole Davidson (6-1, 6-0), at No. 2 from Summer Clawson (6-0, 6-0) and Ashley Fair (6-0), and at No. 3 from Chloe Stuart (6-0, 6-0, 6-0). Doubles wins at No. 1 were recorded by Malia Helms/Iman Berri (6-2) and Taylor Corrigan/Megan Mindte (6-0, 6-0), at No. 2 by Lena Gleizer/Brigette Thomas (6-1, 6-0) and Thomas/JoieSelin (6-1), and at No. 3 by Ashley Shelton/Danielle Conklin (6-0, 6-0) and Shelton/Victoria Spencer (6-0).

Laguna leads the OCL standings with a 5-0 record at the midway point of the league season. The Breakers upped their overall record to 9-2.

“The match gave me a chance to play some of the girls who have not had a lot of varsity playing time, and they played well and dominated their matches,” Laguna Coach Don Davis said.

In a nonleague match Monday at Lower Peters Canyon Park tennis courts in Irvine, Laguna shaded visiting Beckman, 10-8. At No. 1 singles, Kelly Keller swept (6-4, 6-1, 6-0), and Keces/Fair swept in doubles (6-2, 6-2, 6-0).

“We played a team who we were very evenly matched against, and it came down to the last two doubles matches,” said Davis, whose Breakers were locked in an 8-8 tie score. “The girls were fully engrossed, and we won.”

The Breakers began the second-round of OCL play Thursday against Costa Mesa. The score wasn’t available at press time. They travel Monday for a 3:15 p.m. nonleague match at Santa Margarita, and play 3 p.m. nonleague matches Tuesday against Godinez at Saddleback High, and Thursday against Calvary Chapel at The Tennis Center in Costa Mesa.

The Breakers improved to 2-0 in Orange Coast League play Tuesday by cruising past visiting Saddleback, 25-1, 25-8, 25-9, at Dugger Gym. Middle blocker Cameron Dorn had 11 kills, outside hitter Callista Wulff eight kills and seven digs, and setters Aspen Rocha, Taylor Cunningham and Lauren LaMontagne combined for 33 assists.

The Breakers, ranked fifth in CIF-SS Division 2AA, improved to 10-10 overall and won their 92nd consecutive league match.

In a league opener Oct. 1, Laguna defeated visiting Costa Mesa, 25-11, 25-18, 25-20. Outside hitters Alexandra McKeown and Katelyn Carballo had 10 and nine kills, respectively, outside hitter Cassidy Vida eight kills, Carballo a team-high 15 digs, and Rocha 22 assists.

The Breakers hosted Estancia in a league match Thursday. The result wasn’t available at press time.

Laguna plays twice next week, hosting Calvary Chapel Monday, and traveling for a Wednesday game at Godinez. Both matches start at 5:30 p.m.

The Breakers improved to 2-0 in Orange Coast League play Wednesday by routing host Godinez, 23-2. Twelve Breakers hit the scoring column led by Larsen McCarroll’s four goals and three each from Camden Benson and Colton Gregory. Jakob Colladay, Peter Loomis, Jeff Rubino and Liam Shapley all scored twice.

Colladay, Judge Washer and Kai Cameron each had three assists, Washer four steals, and Gordon Pike nine saves and two steals.

In a nonleague game between ranked CIF-SS Division 3 teams, Laguna hosted Murrieta Valley. The Breakers, who were ranked No. 2 entering the game, were defeated by the third-ranked Nighthawks, 12-7. Colladay scored three goals and had two steals, Sebastian Jacobs had two goals, two assists and two steals, and Pike six saves.

Murrieta Valley, which took a 4-1 lead after one quarter and outscored the Breakers, 2-0, in the final quarter, took over the top spot in this week’s Division 3 rankings. Laguna slipped to third.

Laguna also was involved in a nonleague game Oct. 1 against Orange Lutheran at Santiago Canyon College. The Breakers fell, 10-6, to the Lancers who were ranked sixth in CIF-SS Division 1. Scoring single goals for the Breakers were Colladay, McCarroll, Benson, Rubino, Washer and Will Clark.

The Breakers played a nonleague game Thursday at Dana Hills. The score wasn’t available at press time. They host Aliso Niguel in a noon nonleague match Saturday, and return to OCL play on Wednesday (3:15 p.m.) hosting Estancia.

Girls’ Golf

The Breakers hosted a four-way Orange Coast League cluster match Monday at Ben Brown’s Golf Course (par 32), and defeated Estancia, Calvary Chapel and Costa Mesa.

The Breakers also had the low team score (219) Wednesday at a league cluster match at Mesa Linda Golf Course in Costa Mesa.

Results from the two days of competition kept Laguna undefeated (7-0) in league play, and solidified the Breakers’ lead in the OCL title chase, giving them a three-game lead on Calvary Chapel and Estancia who are second place at 4-3.

Laguna team captain, senior Hailey McCullough, shot her career-best score (45) Monday at Ben Brown’s. The Breakers defeated Estancia, 221-272. Co-medalists were Breakers Murphy Thompson and BellaRose Robinson who both shot 40. Thompson and Robinson shared medalist honors with Melissa Cruz of Calvary Chapel (each shot 40) in the Breakers’ 221-259 win over the Eagles. Thompson and Robinson also claimed medalist honors with a 40 score each in a 221-275 win over Costa Mesa.

The Breakers compete in a four-way league cluster at 3 p.m. Monday at Mile Square Park Classic Golf Course in Fountain Valley, and at 3 p.m. Wednesday against Estancia at Mesa Linda Golf Course.

Cross-Country

The Laguna girls’ team, paced by sophomore Grace LaMontagne’s school-record time on the course, came up with a fifth-place finish Saturday at the Palos Verdes Invitational. The Breakers, ranked fifth in CIF-SS Division 4, competed without key runner Pearl Shoemaker.

LaMontagne set the Laguna record time on the Palos Verdes course with a run of 12 minutes, 45 seconds.

The Laguna boys’ cross-country team was idle last weekend.

The Breakers went to 2-1 in league play by defeating Mater Dei “Red,” 5-1, at Grant Street Courts in Newport Beach Oct. 1.

Wins for Laguna in two-team play: Cole Paxson/Issac Wulff (21-14, 24-22), Pete Obradovich/Enzo Sadler (21-12, 21-12), Sam Burgi/Tyler Jackson (21-17, 21-12), and Liam Christiansen/Ayrton Garcia (21-6, 21-11).

Laguna’s four-man team of Paxson/Obradovich/Sadler/Wulff, won, 25-17.

The Breakers took on Corona del Mar Thursday. Results weren’t available at press time.

Laguna ends regular-season play next Thursday against Huntington Beach at Grant Street Courts.

Surfing

The Laguna surf team came up with strong performances in their league opener Sept. 30 against San Clemente at T-Street Beach in San Clemente.

For the second week, the Laguna freshmen trio of Kayla Coscino, Destiny Thompson, Claire Kelley, finished 1-2-3, respectively, in the Girls’ Shortboard event. Noah North took top honors in Boys’ Shortboard. If was the first big win of the high school season for North who also had placed first at a Western Surfing Assn. event the Sept. 26-27 weekend.

Zach Levine, Jeremy Shutts and Dante Madrigal each earned third-place heat finishes in Boys’ Shortboard, and Cole Fink took third in Bodyboarding.
