Baseball: Esperanza wins first game of a tough week

It’s a tough week ahead for Esperanza trying to catch first-place Foothill in the Century League race. All Esperanza has to do is go 3-0 this week.

The Aztecs got their first win of the week on Monday, defeating El Dorado, 5-3. Griffin Barnes had a home run and Jacob White, Nick Ono and Misael Serna each contributed two hits. Now Esperanza must defeat Anaheim Canyon in consecutive games to tie Foothill for first place.

Foothill clinched the top seed from the league with a 6-3 win over El Modena. Hudson Hughes improved to 6-0 and hit his fourth home run. Jerry Carrillo had three hits.

Brandon Alamo hit a three-run home run in Cypress’ 10-2 win over El Toro. Garret Brockel added two hits and three RBIs.

Nick Ortega hit a two-run home run and Tommy Costello allowed two hits in five innings in Chaminade’s 5-1 Mission League win over St. Francis.

In the Del Rey League, Bishop Amat defeated Cathedral, 7-2. Alex Garcia struck out eight in six innings. Michael Palos had a two-run double against his former school. Christian Moya had three hits and scored three runs.

In the Marine League, Narbonne stayed unbeaten with a 9-2 win over Carson. Daniel Rocha (8-1) struck out 10 in five innings. Angel Villela had two doubles and two RBIs.
In the Moore League, Long Beach Wilson (25-4) defeated Long Beach Poly, 10-2. Josh Goldberg struck out six in five innings and also had two hits and four RBIs.
