Joshua Tree Music Festival
When, where: May 13-15, Joshua Tree Lake Campground
Highlights: Free spirits converge for this world-music fest. Live music plays on two stages, fans dance and kids take the Love Train, play games and do yoga and art.
Cost: $110 for a three-day pass; free for age 10 and younger; camping is $15 a night

Tualatin River Bird Festival
When, where: May 12-15, Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge
Highlights: This annual avian celebration presents more than 50 workshops, hikes and river excursions. Learn nature photography or how to build a birdhouse, take a guide-led bike ride, attend a winemaker’s dinner and see a Teddy Roosevelt impersonator.

Castroville Artichoke Festival
When, where: May 21 and 22, Castroville
Highlights: This celebration of all things artichoke includes all manner of artichoke-themed foods as well as a parade, art, eating contests, field tours, live music and kids’ activities.
Cost: $10; $5 for military and children age 4 to 12; free for children age 3 and younger

HONOLULU
Lantern Floating Hawaii Ceremony
When, where: May 30, Magic Island at Ala Moana Beach Park
Highlights: During this annual Memorial Day remembrance, thousands of people gather at sundown to release into the water more than 2,000 candlelighted lanterns to honor ancestors, loved ones who died and soldiers lost to war.
Cost: Free, though donations are accepted.
