Was ‘Innocence of Muslims’ directed by a porn producer?

Share

Is the man who directed an anti-Islam film that sparked riots in Egypt and Libya the same person who directed soft-core porn movies with titles such as “Young Lady Chatterley,” “The Sexpert” and “The Happy Hooker Goes Hollywood”? And might he be using an alias?

Casting notices for the movie under the name “Desert Warrior” listed Alan Roberts as the director for the film, which was shot in Los Angeles County in the summer of 2011. The producer was listed as Sam Bacile, which is believed to be an alias for Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, a Los Angeles-based, 55-year-old Coptic Christian and a felon.

Bacile might not have been the only one on the production using an alias. A Nexis public records search indicates that an Alan Roberts of Santa Monica is an alias for a 65-year-old man named Robert Alan Brownell of Canyon Lake in Riverside County. In 2002, records show, Brownell registered the business names Alan Roberts Entertainment and Digital Movie Studios, both of Santa Monica.

According to the website IMDb, Alan Roberts has produced and directed various horror films and adult movies dating back to the early 1970s.

Roberts’ alleged ties to the porn industry were first reported by Gawker, citing interviews with members of the film’s cast, and Vice, which cited documents obtained anonymously that showed a man named Robert Brownell involved in the pre-production of “Innocence of Muslims.”
