One dead, LAPD officer injured in Reseda shooting, police say

One person was killed and a Los Angeles police officer was wounded in a shooting Monday morning in Reseda.

Officers were driving near Corbin Avenue and Hamlin Street at about 10 a.m. when they got a “LoJack hit” alerting them that a vehicle was stolen, LAPD officials said. They pursued the vehicle for about seven minutes, police said, then chased the driver on foot after he bailed from the vehicle.

At some point, at least one officer fired his gun, fatally wounding the driver. The man, described as being in his 20s, died at the scene. His name had not been released as of Monday evening.

It was not immediately clear why police fired. A revolver was found at the scene, though it was unclear if the man fired any rounds, said Capt. Patricia Sandoval, an LAPD spokeswoman.

Two officers were taken to the hospital for injuries that police said were not life-threatening.

Initial reports indicated one officer was shot in the leg, according to law enforcement sources who were not authorized to speak publicly about the incident.

The second officer had cuts and scratches, Sandoval said.

The suspect was the seventh person shot by on-duty LAPD officers this year, according to a Times analysis. Five were killed.

The last time an on-duty LAPD officer was struck by gunfire was in December, when Officer Joy Park was shot and wounded in the Westlake district as she and her training officer conducted an unrelated investigation. LAPD Chief Charlie Beck later described the shooting as an “unprovoked and cowardly attack.”

The officers in Monday’s shooting were assigned body cameras and had another camera in their patrol car, Sandoval said, but investigators had yet to review the devices to see what they might have captured.

If there is video of the shooting, it would not be eligible for release under the LAPD’s new rules for making recordings public after a shooting or other critical incident involving officers. That policy, adopted March 20, does not go into effect until next week.
