Three people injured in possible gang-related Long Beach shooting

Three people were injured Sunday night during a possible gang-related shooting in Long Beach.

Officers were patrolling the area of Cambodia Town about 7:20 p.m. when they heard gunshots near Lewis Avenue and Anaheim Street, according to Long Beach Police Department.

When officers arrived they saw a shooting had occurred and three people needed to be hospitalized for non-life threatening injuries, police said. Anaheim Street was closed between Alamitos and Martin Luther King Jr. avenues as police investigated the incident.

The crime occurred south of New York Street, where 33-year-old Sanbo Chhoy was shot and killed Jan. 20. Chhoy was the city’s first homicide for 2014. Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation into that case.

There were about 40 homicides reported in Long Beach in 2013, according to the L.A. Times’ Homicide Report.

The booming port town was the 58th-deadliest neighborhood out of Los Angeles County’s 270 neighborhoods, according to a Times analysis of homicide data for that period.
