Lake Forest man accused of shooting wife, abducting son dies in crash
Police say Lonnie Ramos died in a car accident in Juarez, Mexico.
A Lake Forest man accused of abducting his 9-year-old son after shooting his estranged wife in the face has died in a car crash in Mexico, authorities said today.
Lonnie Ramos, 46, was killed in a car accident in Juarez, said Orange County Sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino. It is unclear if anyone else was involved in the accident or when it happened, said Amormino, who was waiting for a report from Mexican police.
Ramos apparently dropped his son Ryan Ramos at a Church of Latter Day Saints in Juarez at about 11 a.m. Sunday, Amormino said. The boy was taken to the U.S. Consulate in Juarez. He is either on his way home now or will be shortly, Amormino said.
Ryan’s mother, Gynnae Ramos, is reportedly in good condition at a local hospital, the spokesman said.
When Gynnae Ramos went to pick up their son on Wednesday, authorities said, Lonnie Ramos shot through the window of the car she was in, hitting her twice. One of the shots struck her in the face.
After the shooting, Ramos fled with the boy in a red Porsche, which he later traded for a rented RV, authorities said.
Authorities issued an Amber Alert on Wednesday and searched for the boy until Sunday, when they learned he was in Mexico.
