AT THE PLATE: The Angels, whose record fell to 5-13-4 in exhibition play, had only seven hits. Two of them were by catcher Chris Iannetta, who raised his spring average to .406. Iannetta singled, took third on Andrew Romine’s single and scored on Mike Trout’s grounder in the fifth inning.
ON THE MOUND: Left-hander Jason Vargas was tagged for five runs and eight hits, including Rickie Weeks’ two-run home run in the first inning and Aramis Ramirez’s solo shot in the fifth, in 51/3 innings. He struck out four and walked one. Reliever Chad Cordero gave up a solo home run to Sean Halton in the seventh.
EXTRA BASES: Reliever Kevin Jepsen, sidelined since March 9 because of triceps tightness, resumed throwing Tuesday, playing long toss for 14 minutes. “It felt strong, loose,” he said. He will throw off a mound Wednesday or Thursday. … Josh Hamilton said he will play in Surprise, Ariz., Thursday night when the Angels face the Texas Rangers, his former club, for the first time this spring.
