Boys’ basketball: Cathedral rallies for overtime win over Long Beach Poly

You can pencil in L.A. Cathedral for the Southern Section Open Division playoffs. That’s what reading the tea leaves say after wins over Price on Saturday night and Long Beach Poly on Monday night.

The Phantoms (14-3) defeated the Jackrabbits, 68-64, in overtime to end La Salle’s one-day tournament with a thriller. KJ Feagin of Poly drove the length of the court to score at the end of regulation. But Cathedral regained control in overtime. Lucas Siewert, a 6-foot-10 junior, hit threes at the end of regulation and in overtime to key Cathedral’s victory. Milan Acquaah added some clutch free throws.

Poly dropped to 15-3. Cathedral played its second consecutive game without Kobe Paras, who has a sprained ankle. Acquaah had 27 points and Leandro Amador added 23. Cathedral trailed at halftime, 29-24.

El Camino Real defeated Cantwell-Sacred Heart, 43-41, with Stone Spellman scoring the winning basket in the final 10 seconds. Chris Terry had 13 points. Cantwell-Sacred Heart played without Gligorije Rakocevic. Balsa Dragovic had 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Gardena Serra received 23 points from Ian Carter in a 72-65 win over West Ranch. Freshman Austin Galuppo had 28 points for West Ranch. Etiwanda defeated Calabasas, 68-45. Jordan Naughton and Kameron Edwards had 12 points apiece.

Damien defeated Rancho Verde, 69-50, to improve to 15-2. Jeremy Hemsley had 20 points.

Brandon Adair scored 29 points in Camarillo’s 71-58 win over Sylmar.

Renaissance defeated Westlake, 67-58. Michael Hayon had 17 points and Isaiah Brooks added 15 for Westlake. Marquise Mosley led Renaissance with 28 points.

Brentwood defeated Hart, 51-49. Maxwell Kupchak scored 19 points. Price defeated Taft, 77-55.

Chaminade was beaten by De La Salle, 56-44, in Berkeley. Jordan Ogudiran had 21 points for the Eagles (15-4).

Orange Lutheran defeated California, 75-46. Rogers Printup and Keisean Lucier-South had 18 points apiece.

University defeated Fremont, 67-44. Nick Brooks scored 18 points and Cushan Allen had 15 points and 12 rebounds. University hosts No. 2 Fairfax on Wednesday.

Oaks Christian defeated Buckley, 52-49.

Mater Dei improved to 16-3 with an 82-54 win over Palm Desert. Bailey Stout and KJ Smith each had 14 points. La’vette Parker, coming back from a thumb injury, added 13 points.

Rancho Cucamonga defeated Victor Valley, 83-31. Braxton Shaw had 15 points.
