Memphis Grizzlies’ Rudy Gay headed to Toronto Raptors

Rudy Gay is on his way to Toronto in the latest and most dramatic move in the Memphis Grizzlies’ makeover, a person with knowledge of the situation told the Associated Press.

The Grizzlies agreed to trade their star swingman to the Raptors on Wednesday, parting with the leading scorer on a team that has aspirations of making a run in the powerful Western Conference. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been announced.

The Raptors gave up point guard Jose Calderon and forward Ed Davis in the deal, and another person familiar with the negotiations said the Grizzlies were in discussion with the Detroit Pistons to swap Calderon for Austin Daye and Tayshaun Prince.

Gay, averaging 17.2 points and 5.9 rebounds, signed a five-year, $82-million maximum contract in July 2010 with Memphis. The 6-foot-8 small forward is due $16.5 million this season and $37 million more over the next two years.

The NBA has acknowledged two costly incorrect calls from the final seconds of recent games.

The league says video replay showed that Denver’s Andre Iguodala reached in and fouled Indiana’s Paul George with the score tied at 101 and 2.2 seconds left Sunday. Iguodala was credited with a steal and the Nuggets won the game.

The league also says a charging foul called against Dallas guard O.J. Mayo on Tuesday should have been a block on Portland’s Ronnie Price. Mayo should have been given two free throws with 1.5 seconds remaining and the score tied at 104. Instead, Portland got possession and LaMarcus Aldridge made the winning shot.

Rematch set between Rios and Alvarado

Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado’s epic brawl at the Home Depot Center in October will have a sequel.

Promoter Bob Arum said that Rios and Alvarado have agreed to a junior-welterweight rematch March 30 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

Rios (31-0-1, 23 knockouts) won their October bout by technical knockout in the seventh round after taking some of Alvarado’s best punches in earlier rounds. Alvarado (33-1, 23 KOs) made the first Rios fight all-action, getting the best of flurries early while his disregard for defense left him exposed to some of Rios’ best blows.

Rios unleashed two hard overhand rights in the seventh, then pounded two lefts to Alvarado’s head, and referee Pat Russell stopped the fight. Alvarado marked Rios under the right eye and often battered the former world lightweight champion.

Jerry Sandusky lost a bid for a new trial when a judge rejected his argument that his lawyers were not given enough time to prepare for the three-week proceeding that ended with a 45-count guilty verdict on child sex abuse charges.

Judge John Cleland’s 27-page order said lawyers for the former Penn State assistant football coach conceded that their post-trial review turned up no material that would have changed their trial strategy.

The Dutch soccer club Den Bosch pledged to do all it can to identify and punish a group of fans who racially taunted American forward Jozy Altidore during a game in the Hague.

Den Bosch said fans responsible for the chants Tuesday during the Dutch Cup match against Altidore’s AZ Alkmaar “do not belong in the De Vliert [Stadium] and will face the toughest possible sanctions.”

Cyclist Frank Schleck was suspended for a year and will miss the Tour de France for using a banned substance on last year’s Tour.

Luxembourg anti-doping authorities backdated the suspension, sidelining Schleck until July 14 when the Tour enters its last week.
