Clint Eastwood saves Pebble Beach tournament director with Heimlich

At 83 years old, Clint Eastwood is still playing the hero, even when he’s not on in front of the camera.

At a volunteer party Wednesday at the AT&T; Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, Eastwood, who has played in the event and now serves as the chairman of the Monterey Peninsula Foundation, saved the life of tournament director Steve John by performing the Heimlich manuever.

“I was drinking water and eating these little appetizers, threw down a piece of cheese and it just didn’t work,” John said, according to the Associated Press. “I was looking at him and couldn’t breathe. He recognized it immediately and saved my life.”

“I looked in his eyes and saw that look of panic people have when they see their life passing before their eyes,” Eastwood told The Carmel Pine Cone. “It looked bad.”

Eastwood said it was the first time he’s had to use the Heimlich. Strangly enough, it was the second time someone has performed the life-saving maneuver on John.

“It was in Colorado about seven or eight years ago. But it wasn’t Clint Eastwood,” he said. “I haven’t talked to him since that night. It was crazy.”

The Pebble Beach pro-am tournament will continue Saturday morning and is scheduled to run through Sunday.
