A different look at the Galaxy

Ever wonder what happens behind the scenes with a championship team?

The newly launched Time Warner Cable will give you an idea beginning Thanksgiving night with its series “L.A. Galaxy Confidential.”

The original, documentary-style show launches on TWC’s Spanish-language channel, Time Warner Cable Deportes, at 6 p.m. Future weekly installments are scheduled for Thursdays at 7 p.m.

The debut of the series, narrated by Enrique Gutierrez, comes 10 days before the Galaxy play in its second consecutive Major League Soccer championship game. That MLS Cup final will also be the final competitive game in a Galaxy uniform for David Beckham.

“L.A. Galaxy Confidential” -- which the network and the team hopes will be a model for future synergy between the new network and one of its marquee properties -- follows similar behind-the-scenes cable series such as Showtime’s “The Franchise” and HBO’s “Hard Knocks.” TWC Deportes airs a similar weekly series on the Lakers.

Such programming can be problematic though. “The Franchise,” an uncut, unfiltered look at professional baseball teams, followed the San Francisco Giants its first season and the Miami Marlins and Manager Ozzie Guillen last summer. But the Marlins’ series was canceled after just seven episodes with the team in last place.

HBO’s “Hard Knocks,” produced by NFL films, has run seven seasons since its 2001 debut. It follows NFL teams during training camp and has won Emmy Awards for outstanding edited sports series or anthology, the last coming in 2010 for its look at the New York Jets and Coach Rex Ryan.

Not all the publicity was deemed favorable, however, and the Jets declined to participate in the series the next season.
