NBA awaits documentation of Clippers sale, still plans Sterling vote
The NBA still wants to see some proof.
The league said it was informed by Clippers co-owner Shelly Sterling that an agreement was reached to sell the team for $2 billion to Steve Ballmer but the NBA awaited one small thing -- paperwork.
Until then, the league says it plans to hold an official vote Tuesday in New York in which all 30 NBA teams can force a sale of the Clippers.
“We await the submission of necessary documentation from Mrs. Sterling,” NBA spokesman Mike Bass said Friday in a statement. “In the meantime, the June 3 special meeting of the NBA Board of Governors remains as scheduled.”
The NBA Advisory/Finance committee met via conference call Friday morning to discuss the Ballmer sale but it did not have the power to call it official. The committee is made up of 10 owners, including Lakers governor Jeanie Buss. Twenty-three of the 30 NBA owners -- a three-fourths majority -- would have to ratify the sale in a vote at a future date.
The league acknowledged that a friendly sale of the Clippers was preferable to a forced one.
“Commissioner [Adam] Silver has consistently said the preferred outcome to the Clippers proceeding would be a voluntary sale of the team,” Bass said.
