Pac-12 Media Day: UCLA has yet to name its offense or its QB

Share

UCLA’s football team has a lot of questions on offense … like what to call it.

The last two seasons, the Bruins ran the “pistol” offense. The smoking gun on its effectiveness was a 10-16 record. Now …

“Our offense doesn’t have a name,” Coach Jim Mora said. “We’re not the West Coast offense or the Wishbone offense. We just want to create opportunities for individuals to use their talents.”

Topping that list is senior running back Johnathan Franklin.

“He’s our workhorse and we’re going to use him to death,” Mora said.

Franklin had 976 yards rushing last season and 1,127 yards in 2010. He has gained 2,669 yards in three seasons, leaving him 1,215 yards short of Gaston Green’s school record of 3,884.

But Franklin is looking at team rather than individual moments. He still has the bitter taste from the end of last season. The Bruins lost to USC, 50-0; lost to Oregon, 49-31, in the conference title game and labored through a lethargic performance in a 20-14 loss to Illinois in the Kraft Fights Hunger Bowl.

“It was tough ending season the way we did,” Franklin said. “I feel we are taking the right steps to put UCLA back on the map.”

One step that has yet to be taken is selecting a quarterback. Mora has said he will wait until the end of the second week of training camp before picking a No. 1 quarterback.

“We waited for some one to jump out the pack [during spring practice],” Mora said. “That didn’t happen because the whole pack elevated. We’ll make a firm decision and move forward.”

He will pick from seniors Richard Brehaut and Kevin Prince, redshirt freshmen Brett Hundley and Jerry Neuheisel and freshman T.J. Millweard.

But for now the Bruins are called “quarterback-less.”
