Boys’ basketball: Junior guard Lindsey Drew is growing up fast for Fairfax [Video]

Those who have followed the basketball exploits of the Drew family through the years have waited patiently for the youngest of the three brothers, Lindsey, to finally grow into his body. It’s happening, and the results are going to be impressive.

On Thursday night, the 6-foot-3 Drew outplayed Arizona State-bound point guard Tra Holder of Brentwood for three quarters, shutting him down defensively to help Fairfax build an 18-point fourth-quarter lead. The Lions held on for a 67-61 victory at the Santa Monica tournament.

Drew made four of his five shots for 10 points, had two blocks and was largely responsible for Holder going one for 10 shooting through three quarters. Holder came on strong in the fourth quarter, especially after Drew fouled out midway through the quarter. Holder scored 15 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter to help Brentwood battle back to within two points before the Lions (2-0) closed out the victory.

“Our scouting report was to not let him get the ball back,” Drew said.
Drew has become the tallest brother. Larry was the starting point guard for UCLA and Landon is a point guard for Cal State Northridge. The father, Larry Drew Sr., is the coach for the Milwaukee Bucks.

“Defensively, my dad tells me because of my length, I have that over my brothers. He said I can be the best one if I keep using my length,” Drew said.

And just wait until Drew develops some upper body strength.

“I’m kind of a late bloomer, you can say,” he said. “From my freshman to sophomore year, I grew four inches and got a little more meat on my bones, and I’m using that to my advantage and slowly developing.”

Fairfax received 19 points and 18 rebounds from Olisaemeka Nwachie and 17 points from Sage Woodruff. Fairfax will play Chaminade in the semifinals on Friday at 3:30 p.m.. Loyola will face Santa Monica in the other semifinal.

Chaminade defeated Inglewood, 67-56, in overtime. Justin Eisen made two free throws late in regulation to send the game into overtime. Jack Williams finished with 26 points and 15 rebounds. Trevor Stanback had 15 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks. Michael Oguine had 12 points. In an earlier game, West Ranch defeated Locke, 77-50.
