The NCAA basketball scoring mark was broken Wednesday night as Nevada Las Vegas gave Coach Jerry Tarkanian his 600th career victory with a 142-140 win over Utah State in triple overtime.

In the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. season opener for both teams, their total of 282 points broke the NCAA record of 275 set in 1976, when Nevada Las Vegas defeated Hawaii Hilo, 164-111.

The win gave Tarkanian a career record of 600-120 for a winning percentage of .833, the highest among active major-college coaches.

Utah State held a 140-134 lead with 3:42 left in the third overtime but was outscored, 8-0, down the stretch.

A Richard Robinson tip-in with 41 seconds left provided the winning basket as the Aggies missed three free throws and a jump shot in the remaining seconds.

After the missed free throws, Utah State got a final chance with 11 seconds left after Las Vegas guard Chris Fancher missed a one-and-one free-throw opportunity. USU’s shot by Vince Washington at the buzzer was batted away, clinching the win.

Las Vegas’ Fred Banks hit a three-point shot with three seconds left in regulation to force the first overtime at 116-116, and he hit a 13-foot shot to force the second overtime with a tie at 126.

Utah State’s Jerome Johnson’s eight-foot shot with six seconds left in the second overtime sent it into a third overtime with the score tied at 134.

Richie Adams led UNLV with 37 points. Banks had 31 and Armon Gilliam scored 27.

Utah State was led by Jeff Anderson with 37 points. Washington had 36 and Greg Grant scored 31.
