Prep Basketball BOYS : Kennedy Scores 16-Point League-Opening Win

Kennedy High School took advantage of 17 San Fernando turnovers and cruised to a 65-49 victory in the Valley 4-A league opener for both schools Wednesday afternoon.

The Tigers led, 12-11, at the end of the first quarter, but that was as close as they came. San Fernando made only 3 of 13 shots in the second quarter. By the fourth, they were down by as many as 19 points.

Kennedy guard Titus Randle led the Cougars, who are 7-5 overall, with 17 points. Andrew Como scored 15 points and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Cordell Seeley had 13 points for San Fernando, which is 4-5 overall.

Granada Hills 60, North Hollywood 57 Sergio Peralta, Desmond Cerceo, Gary Gray and Jack Peterson all scored in double figures as Granada Hills High opened its Valley 3-A League schedule with a 60-57 victory over visiting North Hollywood.

Peralta scored nine of his team-high 15 points in the second quarter as the Highlanders, now 6-4 on the season, erased a 14-10 first-period deficit. Cerceo had 14 points and nine rebounds, while Gray had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Peterson had 12 points, including 10 in the last quarter.

For North Hollywood, Derrick Preston led all scorers with 18 points, while George Perez and Cliff Barnes added 12 each. Birmingham 91, Verdugo Hills 46 Howard Zuckerman scored 32 points to lead Birmingham to a 91-46 victory over Verdugo Hills in an East Valley League opener at Verdugo Hills.

Zuckerman, a 5-9 guard, hit 11 of 25 shots from the field and 10 of 12 free throws.

Birmingham, which also got 13 points from Sam Kaufman and 11 from Scott Dempsey, took advantage of 28 Verdugo Hills turnovers to improve its overall record to 7-3. Verdugo Hills, which got 14 points from guard Ray Zepeda and 10 from Terry Bowen, is 0-4.
