Girls Roundup : Ocean View Upsets Fountain Valley in Opener

The Ocean View High School girls basketball team upset second-ranked Fountain Valley, 53-49, Thursday night in the Sunset League opener at Ocean View.

The Barons led, 8-2, in the first quarter, but couldn’t handle the Seahawks’ full-court press.

The lead changed throughout the game, but Seahawk guards Michelle Chomicz and Dana Douty made clutch free throws at the end to secure the win.

Chomicz, a senior, and Douty, a junior, led Ocean View (11-4 overall) with 16 and 14 points, respectively. Teammate Laura Simek added 8 points and 12 rebounds.

Fountain Valley (9-5) was led by junior guard Kerri Clower’s 12 points and Melissa Handley’s 11.

In other Sunset League action:

Huntington Beach 58, Marina 51--The Vikings got to within two points with three minutes to go, but the Oilers broke Marina’s full-court press to score four straight easy baskets to seal the win. Stefanie Pemper led Huntington Beach (8-7) with 19 points. Temre Kuester scored 15 points to lead the Vikings (7-8).

Edison 62, Westminster 53--Denise Ogburn and Susan Tyler both scored 16 points for the Chargers in the league opener at Westminster. Michelle Hennessey added 13 points and 8 assists for Edison (9-5). The Lions’ Jeannine Battaglia led all scorers with 26 points.

In Angelus League action:

Mater Dei 72, Pius X 27--Mary Gainey scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Monarchs (2-0 in league and 14-3 overall). Hallie Fornaneck had 11 and Katia Diehl 10 for Mater Dei.

In Century League action:

Foothill 89, Santa Ana 25--Jill Osur led all scorers with 20 points and sister Jenny added 19 for the Knights (2-0 and 11-3). Foothill dominated the smaller Saints, who had no player taller than 5-8. The Knights led, 23-10, at the end of the first quarter. Santa Ana’s Lolly Figueroa had 10 points. Chris McFerson added 12 points and 7 rebounds for Foothill.

In South Coast League action:

Dana Hills 29, Capistrano Valley 28--Laura Dowdy, a junior forward playing in her first game since she underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in late December, made a jump shot with 45 seconds to play to give the Dolphins their first win of the season. Dowdy led Dana Hills (1-1 and 1-7) with 13 points. Caylin Combs had 13 points to lead the Cougars (1-1 and 5-5).

El Toro 61, Laguna Hills 17--Senior guard Vicki Mallett scored 15 points and Brdgid Moynihan added 12 for the Chargers (2-0 and 8-4). El Toro led, 15-2, at the end of the first quarter and never looked back.

Irvine 62, San Clemente 23--The Vaqueros’ Dina Graham, a 5-10 senior forward led all scorers with 25 points, including 19 in the second half. Irvine led by 15 at halftime, but coasted thereafter behind Graham’s scoring. Junior Shelly Moceri added 13 points for the Vaqueros. The Tritons’ Jenni Maspero and Lynne Kristoffersen had eight points each.

In Sea View League action:

Newport Harbor 50, Estancia 30--The Sailors (2-1 and 6-4) never trailed, leading 24-14 at halftime, in the game at Newport Harbor. Suzanne Shriner had 12 points and 7 rebounds for the Sailors. Karen Ridone scored 11 to lead the Eagles.

Woodbridge 74, Costa Mesa 41--The Warriors jumped out to a 22-7 lead and coasted the rest of the way. Woodbridge (3-0 and 11-3) was led by Sharon Lyon’s 27 points and 16 rebounds. Teammate Holly Ingraham added 13 points, 13 rebounds and 7 assists. The Mustangs (2-1 and 4-7) made only 14 of 56 field goal attempts.

In Empire League action:

El Dorado 59, Cypress 39--The Golden Hawks used 23 steals to defeat the visiting Centurions. El Dorado (2-2 and 5-5), which took a 24-6 first-quarter lead, was paced by Jill Matyuch’s 23 points.

Kennedy 38, Loara 34--Ursula Lovely had 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Fighting Irish to the upset win at Loara. The Saxons got into foul trouble and three starters, Susan and Carolyn Osato and Liz Eldridge, fouled out. Shana Beer led Loara with 18 points. Loara fell to 3-1 and 12-4. Kennedy is 3-1 and 9-4.

In nonleague action:

Valencia 61, Troy 30--Angela Granger scored 14 points and Stacey Blank and Jenny Wilson added 12 and 11 points, respectively to lead the Tigers. Valencia led, 34-15, at halftime and was never challenged by the Warriors.

Magnolia 52, Bolsa Grande 42--Junior center Michelle Carter, the leading scorer in the Southern Section, scored 42 points to lead the Sentinels. The Matadors cut Magnolia’s 16-point lead down to 4 when Carter was sidelined with her fourth foul early in the fourth quarter. Bolsa Grande could get no closer, however. The Sentinels are 5-5. Caroline Matney scored 16 points for Bolsa Grande.
