Burbank High School knew it would take something special in the way of effort to defeat highly regarded Schurr Friday night and that’s exactly what it got.

Before a capacity crowd at Burbank, the Bulldogs dominated the much taller Spartans en route to a 71-60 Foothill League victory. Burbank is now 2-0 in the league and 11-3 overall. Schurr is 1-1 in league and 11-5 overall.

“We can’t play much better than that,” Burbank Coach Russ Keith said after the victory. “Other than a slight letdown during the last two minutes, we really took it to them.”

Burbank jumped to a quick lead in the first half thanks to the shooting of guard Gary Lotka. The senior had 19 points, 10 in the first half. Orlando Cepeda Jr. had 13 points and 5 assists.

The Bulldogs held a 38-28 lead at the half and gradually increased it throughout the second half.

Camarillo 66, Royal 41

Royal High Coach Jack McCrory looked down his bench before his team lost at 66-41 Marmonte League game to Camarillo and saw something that would make any coach break out in a cold sweat.

Four Highlander starters were sitting on the bench in street clothes.

Senior forwards Joe Pugh and Mike Barry and junior guard Keith Ellen were suspended by McCrory last week for “curfew violations” at a recent tournament. Junior point guard Louie Velasquez, who leads the team in assists, was also on the bench with an ankle injury.

McCrory preferred to look on the bright side. “We’re 2-0 right now and we’re the only undefeated team in the league. So I can enjoy that for another couple hours,” he said before the game.

All-CIF guard Steve Banales led the Scorpions, now 11-4 overall and 3-1 in league, with 21 points but every starter played well. Forward Phil Hahn scored 12 points, point guard David Anderson added 10 with seven assists, center Glen Dutro had eight and also grabbed 11 rebounds and forward Mitch Parrott pulled down seven rebounds.
