Muir vs. Crescenta Valley

With powerful Glendale still rolling along undefeated, this game is looking more and more like a battle for second place in the Pacific League. The game is at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Crescenta Valley. Muir, perhaps the only team with a fair chance of catching Glendale, is 15-4 overall and 4-1 in league play. Crescenta Valley is 14-6 overall and 3-2 in league. When these teams met on Jan. 11, the outcome was much as expected. Harvey Mason of Crescenta Valley was the top scorer with 25 points but the more balanced Muir won, 84-68. Mason, a 6-2 junior guard who averages 25.7 points, and senior 6-4 forward Drew Haberl (17 average) figure to do most of the scoring for the Falcons. Muir has a tall, strong front line led by 6-5 forward Tony Akins, who averages 25.2 points. Other front liners are 6-7 junior Stacey Augmon and 6-6 senior Dennis Price, who averages 12 rebounds a game.

Pasadena vs. Glendale

After suffering a 61-38 defeat by Glendale on Jan. 11, Pasadena may need a minor miracle to upset the undefeated Dynamiters (19-0, 5-0) in a Pacific League rematch at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Glendale. Pasadena (12-6,2-3) certainly must improve upon its dismal 33% field-goal shooting of the first game. Pasadena’s hopes depend largely on 6-1 senior Tommy Bryant, who averages 13.3 points and five assists a game. Pasadena also has an outstanding defense, but it didn’t cause many problems for Glendale in the first game. Glendale has a distinct size advantage with seniors Jay Svoboda (6-8), Bob Mulcahy (6-7) and Fred Bickett (6-5) on its front line. The Bulldogs will counter with 6-5 sophomore Raynell Tillis, LaRay Johnson (6-4) and Larry Todd (6-3). Toss in USC-bound guard Rich Grande (6-2) of Glendale and it could be another long night for Pasadena.
