Girls Roundup : Eldridge Sparks Loara 45-39 Win Over Kennedy

Loara High School’s Liz Eldridge scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half to lead the Saxons to a 45-39 victory at Kennedy on Tuesday.

The Saxons (9-2) are now in sole possession of second place in the Empire League, two games behind Esperanza. Kennedy dropped to third with an 8-3 record.

Susan Osato of Loara led all scorers with 19 points. Kennedy’s Ursula Lovely had 14 points for the Fighting Irish.

In Empire League action:

El Dorado 56, Cypress 41--The Golden Hawks were led by center Cathy Newvine’s 20-point, 11-rebound performance. Forward Jill Matyuch added 14 points, 10 rebounds and 9 assists for El Dorado (7-4, 10-8). Guard Laura Marmitt scored 12 points for Cypress (2-9, 3-15).

Esperanza 62, Katella 43--Guards Sharon Warmus and Charisse Simon led the Aztecs with 19 and 18 points. Forward Heidi Olson added 12 points and led Esperanza (11-0) with 12 rebounds. Julie Standerling led Katella with 13 points.

In Angelus League action:

Mater Dei 80, Pius 39--Guard Mary Gainey led the Monarchs with 20 points. Holly Wood added 14 points and Noelle Manfre had 12 points for Mater Dei, which remains atop the league with a 7-0 record. Michelle Martinez had 16 points for the Warriors.

In Century League action:

Foothill 79, Villa Park 23--The Knights (11-0, 20-3) were led by guard Jennifer Osur’s 27 points. Center Chris McFerson and forward Becky Sullivan contributed 10 and 11 points. Villa Park is 1-10 in league, 2-13 overall.

Santa Ana Valley 62, Santa Ana 16--The Falcons outscored the Saints, 22-0, in the third quarter to secure the victory. Cathy Smith led Santa Ana Valley (5-6) with 17 points. Angela Pacheco of Santa Ana had 12.

In Freeway League action:

Fullerton 59, Troy 37--Senior guard Sandra Williams led the Indians (6-1) with 24 points. Pam Fritsch added 17 points for Fullerton.

In Garden Grove League:

Bolsa Grande 26, Los Amigos 15--The Matadors limited the Lobos to six second-half points. Leading the way for Bolsa Grande (5-2, 11-8) was guard Roseann Flores with 14 points and forward Caroline Matney, who had nine rebounds and seven steals. Los Amigos is 1-6 in league.

In Orange League action:

Brea-Olinda 88, Anaheim 30--The Wildcats had a 41-point advantage at halftime. Reserve center Kristen McPhee scored a career-high 23 points and led Brea in rebounding with 12. Forwards Carrie Egan and Pam Chiotti had 14 and 13 points for Brea (7-0, 22-0). Anaheim is 0-7 in league.

Valencia 35, Savanna 32--The Tigers (5-2, 9-9) remained in second place by overcoming a three-point halftime deficit. Forward Stacey Blank led Valencia with 14 points. Heather Sandoval added 10 points.

Western 59, Magnolia 51--Guard Melanie Williams scored 22 points and Candy Parenteau added 11 for the Pioneers (5-2). Magnolia’s (2-5) Michelle Carter had 29 points, 24 rebounds and 6 steals.

In South Coast League action:

Irvine 58, Dana Hills 53--Shelly Moceri scored 23 points and Cindy Edwards added 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Vaqueros. Dana Hills (4-6, 4-12) was within two points of Irvine (6-4, 8-10) in the last two minutes of the game, but Edwards hit three free throws to secure the victory. Laura Dowdy had 14 points for Dana Hills.

In Sunset League action:

Fountain Valley 42, Marina 37--Jackie Cook and Kerri Clower each had eight points to lead the Barons (6-1, 15-6). Temre Kuester had a game-high 15 points for Marina (2-5, 9-12).

Ocean View 47, Edison 44--The Sea Hawks rallied from a five-point deficit with 2:50 to play to improve their league record to 6-1 and remain tied for first place with Fountain Valley. Trina Vlachos and Laura Simek each had 14 points for Ocean View. Simek also had 16 rebounds. Kristen Wilson had 14 points for Edison.
