This Time, Christian Beat Lincoln by One in Overtime

When Lincoln and Christian high schools met earlier this season in a City Central League game at Christian, Lincoln earned a one-point overtime victory.

This time, however, it was the Patriots who emerged victorious, as Christian defeated the Hornets Tuesday afternoon, 66-65, in double-overtime.

Bill Donley’s 15-foot baseline jumper with 49 seconds left in the second overtime broke a 63-63 deadlock. Matt Price hit a free throw with with four seconds left to make it 66-63. Lincoln scored a basket as the game ended.

Lincoln (4-4, 8-11), which tied the score, 59-59, with seven seconds remaining in regulation, had possession with 15 seconds left in the first overtime, but failed to score.

Bill Donley led Christian (3-5, 9-11) with 25 points, shooting 8 of 15 from the field and 9 of 10 from the line. Price had 21 points and 8 rebounds. Omar McDade scored 25.

CITY EAST:

Madison 68, Mira Mesa 62--Madison (3-5, 9-10) successfully used a half-court press to outscore the Marauders, 28-16, in the fourth quarter of a game played at Madison. Madison guard Jimmy Dean scored 14 of his team-high 22 points in the final quarter. Sean Carter scored 23 and Bill Lee had 10 for Mira Mesa (0-8, 6-14).

Point Loma 63, Serra 54--The Pointers were down 31-27 at halftime, but outscored the Conquistadors, 36-23, in the second half. Darrell Jackson led Point Loma (4-4, 15-6) with 16 points. Steve Smith led Serra (3-5, 12-8) with 18 points.

CITY WEST:

Mission Bay 56, La Jolla 46--Rob Cheatham scored 21 to lead Mission Bay (7-1, 15-5) in a game played at La Jolla. Mike Chandler added 14 and Rick Rogers had 10. Gonzalo Carrillo led the Vikings (3-5, 7-10) with 12. The Buccaneers are tied with Kearny for the league lead.

Kearny 68, University City 46--Brad Milhoan scored 26 points to lead the Komets (7-1, 16-6) to a win at University City. The Centurions are 0-8, 0-18.

University 60, Clairemont 52--Sean Giles scored 12 points and Ken Zampese and James Wilson added 10 each to lead the Dons (5-2, 13-10) to a victory at home. Orlando Henry had 16 and Jeff Sturch added 13 for the Chiefs (2-6, 2-17).

CITY CENTRAL:

Crawford 79, Hoover 71--The Colts gained a share of first place with Hoover by outscoring the Cardinals by 11 points in the second half.

Dee Holton scored a game-high 27 points and Clif Sullivan added 21 to lead the Colts (6-2, 10-9) to a victory at home. Hoover’s (6-2, 18-4) Keith Williams had 24 and Sam Aguirre scored 19 before fouling out late in the game.

St. Augustine 79, San Diego 71--The Saints connected on 30 of 41 free throw attempts to beat the Cavers in a game played at San Diego. Billy Bloemers scored 22 and Paul Larkin added 16 for the Saints (4-4, 9-11). Sean Perkins scored 23 for San Diego (1-7, 4-15).

GROSSMONT LEAGUE:

Monte Vista 63, Santana 59--The Monarchs were outscored by the Sultans, 20-14, in the final quarter, but held on to remain unbeaten in the league with a 13-0 mark.

Demetrius Laffitte scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Monarchs (19-1 overall) in a game played at Monte Vista. Jimmy Tatum scored 20, Jeff Barry had 18 and Billy Mathis had 15 points and 14 rebounds for Santana (7-7, 13-8).

El Cajon 60, Mount Miguel 59 (OT)--Two free throws by Robert Jones with seven seconds left gave the Braves (5-8, 8-11) a win at Mt. Miguel. Jones led all scorers with 31 points. Lewis Holloway had 16 for the Matadors (2-12, 4-17). El Capitan 83, Granite Hills 52--The Vaqueros out-rebounded the Eagles, 51-20, in winning at El Capitan. Steve Burroughs led El Capitan (12-1, 16-4) with 18 points. Brad Burton had 17 and Mitch Burton scored 15 points and 11 rebounds. Tom Shawcroft, the county’s eighth-leading scorer, had a game-high 25 points for Granite Hills (3-11, 4-17).

Helix 70, Grossmont 53--The Highlanders (9-4, 13-7) hit 20 of 24 free throws against the Foothillers in a game played at Helix. Mike Favero scored 16 points, Jim Ybarra added 12 and Doug Renert had 11 for Helix. Don Angotti had 18 for Grossmont (2-11, 4-15).
