College Baseball : UC San Diego Wins On Run in 9th; Aztecs Roll, 18-2

They did it different ways, but San Diego State and UC San Diego baseball teams each improved their records to 3-0 with victories Tuesday.

UCSD needed a single by Jim Martin in the bottom of the ninth inning to pull out a 5-4 victory over Redlands at Olsen Field in La Jolla.

San Diego State scored 10 runs in the first inning and 5 in the third en route to an 18-2 victory over Point Loma Nazarene at Point Loma.

SDSU shortstop Steve Hill went 3 for 4 and drove in four runs, three of those on a fifth-inning home run. Third baseman Deron Johnson was 2 for 3 and had three RBI. Catcher David Campagna was 3 for 3.

Madison High School product Mike Erb picked up the victory by pitching the first five innings for the Aztecs, eighth-ranked in Division I. Rusty Elsberry, Richard Holsman, Tim Wahl and Kevin Piper each worked an inning for SDSU. Mike Neil was the loser for Point Loma Nazerene.

Casey Pierce took the loss for Point Loma Nazerene (0-5).

San Diego State plays at Cal State Long Beach today.

For UCSD, pitcher Dave de Cordova earned the victory to improve his record to 2-0. De Cordova pitched a three-hitter against Point Loma last Tuesday.

Triton first baseman John Rosness went 3 for 4, and third baseman Derek Alkonis had two hits.
