Community College Baseball : Cypress Defeats El Camino, 5-0

Cypress College made Coach Scott Pickler’s debut a success as the Chargers defeated El Camino, 5-0, Friday in the baseball teams’ season opener at Cypress.

Jim Bennett (7 innings) and Bob Godall (1 innings) combined to limit the Warriors to seven hits in the shutout victory. First baseman John Morin led Cypress’ 10-hit attack by going 2 for 2 with two RBIs. Morin doubled in the Chargers’ first run in the fourth inning and sparked a two-run rally in the sixth with a leadoff single.

In other community college baseball action:

Santa Ana 10, Taft 5--Vince Shinholster struck out Taft’s Nick Milier with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth to earn a save in the Dons’ victory at Santa Ana. Shinholster earlier hit a two-run home run. Don starting pitcher Steve Scanlon, who worked 4 innings, got the win.

Ruben Gonzalez, Doug Maher and Gary Thomason led Santa Ana’s 11-hit attack. Gonzalez had three hits, including a bases-empty home run, and scored twice. Maher had a triple, single, two stolen bases, two RBIs and scored twice while Thomas had two hits, two RBIs and scored twice.

Fullerton 3, Long Beach City 2--Rob DeYoung pitched three strong innings of relief as the Hornets edged the Vikings in a first-round game of the San Diego State Tournament at Smith Field.

Fullerton scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 3-0 lead into the seventh when Long Beach scored two runs against winning pitcher Pat Simms. DeYoung came on to retire the side and stop the rally and then worked two more scoreless innings to gain a save.
