JC BASEBALL : Romero’s Home Run Lifts Pierce

Moorpark College scored first in a non-league game at Pierce Thursday with a home run in the top of the second inning by center fielder Dan Russell. But Pierce was not to be outdone when it came back in its half of the inning on left fielder Mike Romero’s three-run homer which helped the Brahamas to a 7-2 victory.

Moorpark scored again in the third, but that was it for the Raiders. Pierce scored again in the fifth and had three more in the sixth to cap the win and improve its record to 2-3. Moorpark drops to 2-4.

The winning pitcher was Steve Reed (2-0), while the loser was Steve Wapnick (2-1).

Golden West 3, Valley 2

Golden West College center fielder Todd Nash homered in the seventh and Golden West scored twice more in the eighth on an error to beat Valley in a non-conference game.

Shortstop Ron Dale had singled home third baseman Tim Riley in the bottom of the first inning to give Valley an early lead against the visiting Rustlers.

Losing pitcher Bob Hernandez’ record is now 0-1, while Golden West’s Larry Salaets goes to 2-0. Valley fell to 2-4-1 while the Rustlers are 4-0 overall.

Canyons 6, L.A. Harbor 5

College of the Canyons scored single runs in each of the last four innings to record a come from behind win over Harbor in loser’s bracket of the Casey Stengal Tournament at Santa Ana College.

First baseman Mike Neighbors singled in Frank Halcovich with a grounder up the middle with one out in the bottom of the ninth to win it for sophomore right-hander Rocco Buffolino, who pitched four scoreless innings in relief for his first win of the season.

Canyons, 5-3, takes the field this moring at 10 in the fourth round of the double elimination tournament.
