Prep Baseball : Sunny Hills’ 33 Runs, 35 Hits Help Sweep Saddleback

After 23 hits and 20 runs against San Clemente Friday, Sunny Hills High School came back for 33 runs and 35 hits Saturday to sweep a doubleheader from Saddleback, 18-17 and 15-5, atthe Roadrunners’ field.

In the first game, Saddleback had the bases loaded and the tying run on third with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. Lancer relief pitcher Brian Olynyk came in to record a strikeout, pop out and fielder’s choice to save the game for Sunny Hills.

Troy Brown and Dan Ontiveros each hit two-run home runs in the opener, and David Wackerman went 4 for 5 and Adrian Schicker 3 for 4 for Sunny Hills. Every starting Lancer had at least one hit. David Martinez pitched 5 innings for the win.

Sunny Hills received complete-game pitching from Richard Cruz in the rain-shortened second game that was called after five innings. The Lancers already had 19 hits, including Brown’s second homer of the afternoon and a two-run shot by Cruz, who went 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs.

Rod Turner (3 for 4) and Russell Fredericks (2 for 4) each had 3 RBIs for Sunny Hills, which improved its record to 3-1. In other nonleague action:

Troy 20-22, Laguna Beach 8-0--Jeff DeJesse went 6 for 8 with 2 home runs and 6 RBIs, Mark Crissinger went 3 for 8 with 2 homers and 8 RBIs, Steve Russell went 4 for 8 with a home run and 5 RBIs, and John Mash went 5 for 9 with 7 RBIs to lead the Warriors (3-1) to a sweep of the Artists at Troy. Mash hit for the cycle in the opener.

Mash and Tony Panetti combined to no-hit Laguna Beach in the second game, which was called after five innings. Mike Greer pitched the last three innings of the opener and struck out 8 of 9 batters.

El Dorado 6-12, Brea-Olinda 1-8--Junior right-hander Jeff Petredes went all the way on a three-hitter and struck out seven in the opener, and the Golden Hawks went on to sweep the Wildcats at El Dorado. Steve Wholley and Shawn Blankenship each had two hits in the first game, and Andy Vlastnik and Rob Wojcik each knocked in two runs in the second game.

Valencia 9-7, Villa Park 3-1--Jim Campanis went all the way on a 4-hitter, struck out 7 in the opener and went 3 for 8 with 3 doubles to lead the Tigers (3-0) to the sweep at home. Andy Ruscitto hit three home runs in the day and has four this week.

Santiago 11-6, Buena Park 9-17--The Cavaliers scored four runs in the sixth inning, two of them coming on Ed Perez’s two-run single, to win the first game but were blown out in the second game, which was called after five innings.

Webb 6-2, Orange Lutheran 3-3--Mike Amling’s sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the sixth inning of the second game lifted the Lancers to the win in the second game. It gave them a split of a doubleheader with the Gauls at Orange Lutheran. Left-hander John Cummings pitched a complete-game, 2-hitter and struck out 16 for the Lancers.

El Rancho 8-7, Bolsa Grande 4-3--Jose Medina hit a three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning in the opener, and added three hits and two RBIs in the nightcap to lead the Dons to a sweep of the Matadors (0-4) at Bolsa Grande.

Fountain Valley 9-4, Long Beach Jordan 5-5--Terry Reichart went 3 for 3 to lead the Barons to the win in the opening game, but Fountain Valley (3-1) suffered its first loss of the season in the nightcap on Blair Field at Long Beach. LOARA TOURNAMENT

Laguna Hills 5, Magnolia 4--Howard Gasser tripled to drive in Dave Shetland in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Hawks the victory at Brookhurst Park. Reliever Jay Christensen, who entered the game in the top of the seventh and picked off John Hangartner, was the winning pitcher. Hangartner had singled to tie the game, 4-4.

Steve Fesperman highlighted Laguna Hills’ four-run first inning with an RBI double. The Hawks (2-1) will meet La Quinta in the championship quarterfinals. Manuel Rodriguez and Jay Hannah each had two hits for Magnolia.

Loara 8, Newport Harbor 2--The Saxons had seven runs in the fourth inning, and left-hander Tim Hopper went the distance for Loara, which advances to the quarterfinals to play Western. Servite 4, Pacifica 1--Jeff Larson allowed five hits in five innings and struck out five to help the Friars defeat the Mariners in the consolation round. Servite (1-1) had just four hits, including Dave Houk’s two-run single in the second inning.

Huntington Beach 9, Irvine 3--Cary Pont hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning, and Darrin Tomasick went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs to lead the Oilers to the second-round win over the Vaqueros at Anaheim’s Glover Field. Huntington Beach improves to 2-0 and will face Fountain Valley in the quarterfinals.

GLENDORA TOURNAMENT

Sonora 5, Bishop Amat 4--Brian Miller’s second home run of the game, a two-run shot in the top of the sixth inning, lifted the Raiders to the win in the first round at Glendora High. Miller added a two-run blast in the second inning to back the pitching of freshman Jamie Nunn, who allowed 7 hits in 6 innings to earn the victory.
