College Baseball : LaVerne Rallies in 9th Inning to Tie but Connors Wins It in 11th for SCC

Randy Connors hit a fly ball to the left-field fence with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th inning to give Southern California College a 5-4 win over LaVerne in a nonconference game Tuesday in Costa Mesa.

Connors’ game-winner drove in Dean Harvey and made a winner of Brian Otten, who entered the game with one out in the top of the ninth and had two strikeouts in both the 10th and 11th innings.

LaVerne trailed, 4-2, entering the ninth inning but rallied to tie. SCC had the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the ninth, but had the winning run thrown out at the plate.

Pat Price was 4 for 5, and Dave Turney and Jeff Motske had two hits and one home run each for the Vanguards (17-9-2).

In other college action:

Azusa Pacific 6, Cal State Fullerton 2--The Cougars took advantage of six Fullerton errors that led to three unearned runs in the nonconference game at Titan Field. Larry Casian, one of seven pitchers used by Fullerton, got the loss. Greg Shirley was 3 for 3 with 3 RBIs and Mike Hewitt was 2 for 4 with a double and home run for Azusa Pacific. Fullerton is 14-16-1.
