College Baseball : Big Innings Figure In SDSU Split

The San Diego State and Nebraska baseball teams took turns showing they could win with a big inning in a doubleheader Saturday at Smith Field.

The Aztecs scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh and went on to win the first game, 8-7, and the No. 19-ranked Cornhuskers scored five in the eighth to take the second game, 8-3.

In the opener, San Diego State trailed, 6-1, before its six-run explosion. A two-out, two-run single by catcher David Campagna put the Aztecs ahead 7-6. Nebraska tied it with a run in the eighth, but the Aztecs won it in their half of the inning on a home run by right fielder Ron Vanegas. It was Vanegas’ first home run of the season.

Mark Grace and Deron Johnson each had three hits for the Aztecs, and Campagna had three RBIs. Bill McGuire had three hits and two RBIs for the Cornhuskers. Paul Claes (1-1) was the winner. Bill Mulligan (0-2) took the loss.

The second game was scheduled to go seven innings, but was tied, 3-3, after seven. Mike Duncan’s two-run double sparked Nebraska’s five-run outburst in the eighth. Duncan had three hits and three RBIs in the day.

Grace went 2 for 4 for San Diego State, giving him 5 hits in 6 at-bats in the doubleheader. Roger Webb (2-1) was the winning pitcher and Claes (1-2) was the loser.

San Diego State is 25-10. The Cornhuskers are 12-8.
