Prep Baseball : Canyon’s Damian Is Nearly Perfect : He Allows One Baserunner in No-Hitter Against Kennedy

Canyon High School’s Leonard Damian pitched a no-hitter Monday in the Comanches’ 5-0 victory over Kennedy in the consolation semifinals of the Anaheim Lions Tournament at Glover Stadium.

Damian (5-1) allowed only one batter to reach base. Dave Liken drew a walk in the third inning but was caught stealing. Damian faced the minimum 21 hitters and struck out eight. He threw just 84 pitches.

The no-hitter was the fourth in Canyon history. In 1974, Dave Baer and Mike Gilles combined for a no-hitter. A week later, Gilles threw one by himself. In the 1983 Anaheim Tournament, Gilles’ brother, Wayne, pitched a no-hitter.

The seventh-ranked Comanches (9-2-1) scored four runs in the fourth inning. The big hit was catcher Todd French’s hit a two-run double.

Canyon will play Woodbridge today at Glover Stadium for the consolation championship.

In other Anaheim Lions Tournament action:

Woodbridge 10, Montebello 5--In the second round of consolation play at Glover Stadium, the Warriors beat the Oilers behind junior catcher Cam McNee’s five RBIs. Starter Jeff Bacon went all the way for the win. Woodbridge (6-5) advances to the consolation championship today at Glover Stadium at 1 p.m.

In Bolsa Grande Tournament play:

Capistrano Valley 6, La Mirada 5--Ricky Jones singled in Nathan Call with what proved to be the winning run in the top of the seventh inning in a semifinal game at Rancho Alamitos. The Matadores, trailing 6-3 in the bottom of the seventh, scored two runs and had a man at first base, but could not push the tying run across. Danny Blancett, Tommy Adams and Call each went 2 for 4 for the Cougars. Capistrano Valley (7-6) meets Leuzinger in the championship game at Bolsa Grande today at 1:30 p.m.

Los Amigos 7, Rancho Alamitos 1--Scott Soukup hit a three-run homer in the third and pitched five innings to earn his first win of the season and lead the Lobos in the consolation semifinal at Los Amigos. John Kuzmic was 2 for 3 with one RBI and three stolen bases for the Lobos (4-7). Tom Otto suffered the loss for Rancho Alamitos.

Bolsa Grande 3, La Serna 1--The Matadors managed only three hits, but made the most of them in a semifinal game for fifth place at Bolsa Grande. Mark Lyle knocked in two runs and stole a base for the Matadors. Bolsa Grande improved its record to 5-8 while La Serna’s dropped to 7-7.

Leuzinger 7, Estancia 4--The Olympians won their fifth straight tournament game by turning back the Eagles in championship round play. Leuzinger (11-4) faces Capistrano Valley for the title today at Bolsa Grande at 1:30 p.m.

In Santa Ana Elks Tournament action:

Foothill 9, Villa Park 3--The Knights routed the Spartans in a second-round game at Hart Park as Ken Briggs went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Doug Kopcha and John McTaggart each went 2 for 3 for the Knights. David Fox earned the win.

Katella 9, Foothill 4--Katella dominated Foothill in a semifinal game at Hart Park and will go on to today’s title game. Todd Lloyd went 2 for 3 with two RBIs for Katella while Rick Sanchez picked up the win. Foothill (6-8) moves on to play for third place at noon today at Santa Ana College.

Corona 13, Irvine 1--Winning pitcher Jason Young led the Panthers with two RBIs. The Vaqueros averted a shutout by scoring their run in the last inning.

Orange 7, Santa Ana Valley 0--Chris LaCascia had a single, double and two RBIs to lead the Panthers to a consolation bracket win at Santa Ana College. The Falcons were eliminated from the tournament.

Irvine 7, Los Alamitos 4--Winning pitcher Steve Lipton helped his own cause by getting two hits and two RBIs as the Vaqueros downed the Griffins in a consolation bracket game.

Millikan 7, Los Alamitos 1--Millikan catcher Brian Turang led the Rams to the victory with a home run and a single. Keven Gail was the winning pitcher. Kevin Jeanotte knocked in the Griffins’ only run.

Millikan 12, Corona 12--The game was called because of darkness and will be resumed at 10 a.m. today at Santa Ana College.

Santa Ana 8, El Modena 7--The Saints scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to secure the win in the consolation quarterfinals. John Schilling hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning for the Saints. Richard Tellez was the winning pitcher.

Santa Ana 15, Orange 5--John Schilling went 4 for 5 with two doubles and three RBIs in a consolation semifinal game at Santa Ana. The game was called after six innings because of darkness. The Saints advance to the consolation final today at 1:30 p.m. at Santa Ana High School.

El Toro 6, Garden Grove 5--The Chargers edged the Argonauts in a game at Hart Park called after six innings because of a tournament time limit. Scott Shockey hit a three-run homer and Scott Perkins picked up the win for the Chargers.

Katella 7, Mission Viejo 4--With the Knights holding a 3-2 lead in the fifth ining, Steve Bennett hit a bases-loaded triple and scored on a fly ball by Dave Lewis to put the Diablos away in the second round. Bob Miles was the winner and Mike Connolly got save.

Banning 2, Saddleback 0--Cym Ponce threw a four-hitter in a consolation-round victory over the Roadrunners at Saddleback (3-9).

El Toro 12, Banning 11--The Chargers sent 12 batters to the plate during their seven-run first inning, then held on for the second-round consolation victory at Saddleback.

El Toro pitcher Rich Faulks gave up all 11 runs and still got the win. Nick Adams got the save. He struck out Mando Ponce for the final out with runners on second and third.

In the Pomona Elks Tournament:

Cypress 12, San Bernardino 3--The Centurions routed the Cardinals in a first-round game at Ganesha. Jeff Butler went 3 for 4 with three triples and three RBIs for the Centurions. Starter Paul Lysgard evened his record at 2-2.

Cypress 10, Upland 1--Kevin Black went 3 for 3 to lead the Centurions to the second-round win at Mt. San Antonio College. Kevin Bumgarner picked up the win. Cypress improved its record to 9-5.

Ocean View 6, Northview 0--Craig Anderson threw a one-hitter in a first-round game at Mt. San Antonio College called after six innings because of a tournament time limit. The Seahawks’ Tim Tembreull tripled with the bases loaded in the third inning.

Ocean View 6, Ganesha 4--The Seahawks scored four runs in the fifth inning to put this second-round game away. Tom Smythe went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and David Tinkle hit a two-run double for the Seahawks. With the two wins, Ocean View raised its record to 9-5.

Western 9, Chaffey 3--The Pioneers downed the Tigers in the first round of the tournament.
