David Carter, Stephen Thompson and Stanley Brundy, who led unbeaten Crenshaw to the State Division I high school basketball championship, headline The Times’ 1984-85 All-Central City team.

The three Crenshaw athletes, and other area high school basketball All-Stars, will be honored by The Times tonight in ceremonies at the Harry Chandler Auditorium in Times Mirror Square. The guest speaker will be USC Coach Stan Morrison.

Carter, a 5-11 senior guard and a repeater from last season’s team, quarterbacked the Cougars to a City Section title, a 24-0 record and the state 4-A championship, averaging 11.1 points and 6.6 assists a game. He was spectacular in the final two minutes of the state final, scoring two critical baskets to send the game, which Crenshaw eventually won, 72-62, into overtime.

Thompson, a 6-3 junior guard, averaged 28 points a game, scoring often on spectacular dunks. Scouts believe that if Thompson can add a mid-range jump shot to his anti-gravity act, he will be among the most recruited prospects in the nation next season.

Brundy, a 6-6 senior, averaged only nine points, but took down 13 rebounds a game and was an imposing figure on defense. In the State semifinal game against Fresno Edison, he grabbed 20 rebounds and blocked four shots.

Manual Arts, which battled Crenshaw to the wire in the City final before falling, 73-62, placed two players on the team, forward Marco Fleming and center Anthony Martin.

Fleming, a 6-7 senior who is being pursued by Wyoming, Clemson and Nevada Las Vegas, averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds a game. Martin, 6-8, averaged 12 points and 6 rebounds in Manual Arts’ 20-6 season. At the moment, the 225-pound senior is being recruited by UCLA, Oklahoma and Cal State Long Beach.

Other repeaters from last season’s team are Washington guard Anthony Perry, already committed to San Jose State, and center Anthony Blackmon, who led Wilson to a 20-2 record.

Perry, a good shooter, averaged 25 points and made 89% of his free throws. Blackmon, whose team lost to eventual City 3-A champion Fairfax in the semifinals, put together an impressive season, averaging 19 points and 17 rebounds a game.

Two other juniors were also selected--guard David Jones of Verbum Dei and forward Lafayette Dorsey of Dorsey. Jones, 5-11, is cat-quick with a soft touch. He averaged 21.5 points and 6.4 assists. Dorsey, a 6-3 leaper, was a bright spot for the Dons, who suffered through as a 6-14 season. He averaged 24.2 points and 13 rebounds.

Roosevelt’s Alfred Ayala rounds out the team. Ayala, a 6-1 forward, averaged 12 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists.
