VIEWING SPORTS : NEW ANGELS, DODGERS FREEWAY SERIES

If the local Freeway Series is on this weekend, can the Major League Baseball season be far behind?

The answer is no, it gets underway next week, but in the meantime, thanks to the Angels celebrating their 25th season, the management is giving TV viewers tonight’s second game of the three-game set between the Dodgers and Angels.

Channel 5 will be televising it live from Anaheim Stadium at 7 p.m., with the new and improved Angel broadcasting team of Bob Starr and Joe Torre reporting.

The season really breaks open Tuesday morning with a flock of games on cable and commercial TV: Cardinals vs. Mets, 10:30 a.m. on WOR; Pirates vs. Cubs, 11 a.m. WGN; Padres vs. Giants, 1 p.m. (39); Braves vs. Phillies, 4:30 p.m. WTBS; and Dodgers vs. Astros, 5:30 p.m. (11).

There are a number of warm-up shows to get you in the mood for the grand old game--if that’s necessary. Today at 12:30 p.m. (Channels 4, 36, 39), NBC’s Bob Costas will tell how Vin Scully and Joe Garagiola are raring to go on the network’s 26-week baseball schedule, and how some players did their warmups in an annual softball game.

Sunday at noon, Channel 4 has “Baseball 1985: A Look Ahead,” with ex-Red Johnny Bench hosting. CBS’ Monday morning news (7-7:30 a.m.) has baseball commissioner Peter V. Ueberroth, the Mets Keith Hernandez and Tigers’ owner Tom Monaham lined up to discuss the season.

Monday at 8 p.m., Channel 5 presents a special baseball anniversary show, “Heaven Can’t Wait,” with Dick Enberg back in the fold as host. Enberg will be granted leave this season by NBC to work some Angel broadcasts again.

CBS has an NBA doubleheader Sunday featuring two of the strongest teams heading for the playoffs in a couple of weeks. Trouble is, the teams--the Lakers and the Celtics--aren’t playing each other in this crazy scheduling that has them only meeting twice a season.

The Celtics open up, hosting the floundering New York Knicks at Boston Garden, 10 a.m., over Channels 2 and 8, with Frank Glieber and James Brown reporting.

Then at about 12:30 p.m., the Lakers host the Portland Trail Blazers, who, though trailing the Lakers by a mile in the standings, are more competitive and are in the playoffs too. The No. 1 broadcasting team of Dick Stockton and Tom Heinsohn report from the Forum.

The Lakers and Celtics most certainly will clash again somewhere down the line in the lengthy playoffs.
