Gold Wins, 28-7, to Get Share of First Place

Bill Johnson rushed for a team-record 165 yards as the Denver Gold defeated the Arizona Outlaws, 28-7, Monday night in a United States Football League game.

The victory moved Denver (5-2) into a first-place tie with the Houston Gamblers in the Western Conference. The loss dropped the Outlaws to 4-3.

Only 12,769 fans--slightly less than the team’s season average--showed up in clear, 50-degree weather.

Johnson, who carried the ball 18 times, broke the Denver single-game rushing record of 159 yards, set by Vincent White in 1983.

Arizona defensive tackle Kit Lathrop, the two-time USFL Lineman of the Year, was injured late in the first quarter and didn’t play the remainder of the game. He appeared to have suffered a strained ligament in his right knee, but the severity of the injury wasn’t immediately known.
