The threatening Oriental fruit fly was declared eradicated by Los Angeles County officials who formally lifted quarantines around the West Los Angeles area once invaded by the pest. The nine-month infestation, during which movement of nearly 100 types of fruit and vegetables was banned, led to the laying of traps in a 112-square-mile area. Paid for by local, state and federal agencies, the eradication effort cost $650,000, county Agricultural Commissioner Paul Engler said. No flies have been sighted since November.
