Sports DIGEST : Glendale Runner to Skip Boston Race on Own Accord

Glendale marathoner Carlos Godoy, 33, who was accused of falsifying his qualifying times for this year’s Boston Marathon, will not compete in Monday’s race even though event organizers have reinstated the Colombian native.

“I have the flu and am unable to run,” Godoy said from his home Friday night. “I would go if I wasn’t sick. I have nothing to hide.”

Godoy was embroiled in controversy Friday, when a Boston Herald story questioned the times on his entry forms. Godoy had been assigned No. 6 for the race based on those times.

The Herald’s story said Godoy’s time (2:14:41) as the fourth-place finsher in the Beppu Marathon was inaccurate. The newspaper reported neither Godoy’s name nor the time he entered for the Boston race matched up with the Japan race’s official records.

Godoy, a former long-distance track coach at Glendale High School, said he will next compete in the Mt. San Antonio Relays in Walnut on April 25.

Sapper Rides Again at Speedway

Ken Sapper of La Crescenta will make his second bid for a first-place finish in the modified division as the racing season continues tonight at Saugus Raceway.

Preceding the 40-lap main event, drivers in the sportsman and street stock divisions will compete. Dave Phipps of Reseda won the season opener in last Saturday’s sportsman main event, while Agoura’s Ken Conway took first in the street stocks.

Fifteen laps of figure-eight racing will end the evening. Bryan Hayden of Sylmar picked his way through the chaos to win the event last week.

Gates open at 4 p.m.; time trails are set for 5:30. Racing starts at 7.
