Briton Overcomes Leg Cramps to Win Boston Marathon
Defending champion Geoff Smith of Great Britain, battling leg cramps during the final six miles, won the 89th Boston Marathon today.
Smith, who faltered at the 19-mile mark with cramps, stumbled across the finish line in an unofficial time of 2 hours, 14 minutes and 2 seconds. He had a time of 2:10:34 last year.
He was short of the Boston record of 2:08:51, set by Alberto Salazar in 1982, and the world record of 2:08:05, set in 1984 in America’s Marathon-Chicago by Steve Jones of Wales.
Lisa Larsen Weidenbach won the women’s division with an unofficial time of 2:34:05.
