Briton Overcomes Leg Cramps to Win Boston Marathon

BOSTON — Defending champion Geoff Smith of Great Britain, battling leg cramps during the final six miles, won the 89th Boston Marathon today.
Smith, who faltered at the 19-mile mark with cramps, stumbled across the finish line in an unofficial time of 2 hours, 14 minutes and 2 seconds. He had a time of 2:10:34 last year.
He was short of the Boston record of 2:08:51, set by Alberto Salazar in 1982, and the world record of 2:08:05, set in 1984 in America’s Marathon-Chicago by Steve Jones of Wales.
Lisa Larsen Weidenbach won the women’s division with an unofficial time of 2:34:05.
