New Jersey Coach Walt Michaels compared running back Herschel Walker to one of pro football’s legends Friday night after Walker led the Generals to a 21-18 victory over the Memphis Showboats.

“Today, I saw a runner more punishing than Jim Brown,” Michaels said. “Someone is taking a beating out there, and it isn’t Herschel.”

Walker carried the ball 27 times and racked up 164 yards--most of them right through the Showboats’ defense.

Quarterback Doug Flutie passed for 107 yards, throwing for one touchdown and running for another as the Generals hung up their sixth United States Football League victory of the season against three defeats.

The Showboats, who handed the Generals their third touchdown on a pair of sacks and a fumble deep in Memphis territory, fell to 4-5.
