Orange League : First-Place Western Beats Valencia, 5-1

David Tellers pitched a complete-game eight-hitter Friday to lead first-place Western High School to a 5-1 Orange League victory over Valencia at Western.

The win gave Western a two-game lead over Valencia, Brea-Olinda, Magnolia and Savanna, who are all tied for second place.

Western led, 1-0, going into the fourth inning when it broke the game open with four runs. John Ortiz led off the inning with a single, David Tellers walked and two outs later, both scored on a single by John Tellers. Rich Lodding then walked, and after a wild pitch moved John Tellers and Lodding into scoring position, they came home on Mike Frabotta’s single.

Ortiz, John Tellers, Lodding and Frabotta each had two hits for Western. Andy Ruscitto was 2 for 2 with an RBI for Valencia, and Jim Campanis was 2 for 3.

David Tellers struck out two and walked two, one intentionally. Steve Street took the loss for Valencia.

In other Orange League action:

Magnolia 9, Brea-Olinda 6--The Sentinels scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning at Brookhurst Park to break a 6-6 tie to move into a four-way tie for second place. Tim Schmidt, Rony Oliver and John Hangartner each had RBI singles in the inning.

Jay Hannah went 3 for 4 with three RBIs on the night, and Schmidt added two hits and three RBIs. Carlos Gonzales, who relieved Tom Woodburn in the fifth inning, earned the pitching victory.

Savanna 4, Anaheim 1--The Rebels beat the Colonists at Savanna.
