Top Seeds Win Opening Matches

SAN DIEGO — The three top-seeded players in the qualifying event for the $75,000 Virginia Slims of San Diego tennis tournament won their first-round matches Saturday at the San Diego Hilton Beach and Tennis Resort.
San Diego State’s Linda Howell, who is seeded third, beat another local woman, Debbie Robb of UC San Diego, 7-5, 3-6, 6-0.
Top-seeded Kristen Dreyer slipped past Susan Rimes, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3. Second-seeded Claudia Monteiro beat Jean Hepner, 6-3, 6-3. The event’s wild-card entry, 14-year-old Susan Sloane, whipped Trey Lewis, 6-1, 6-3.
Qualifying play continues with two rounds today. The four players who emerge from the final round qualify for the actual tournament, which begins on Monday with a 32-player field that includes Wendy Turnbull and Andrea Jaeger.
