5-Year-Old Girl Struck, Killed by Van
A 5-year-old girl was killed Saturday in Sun Valley when she darted into a street from behind an ice cream truck and was struck by an oncoming van, police said Sunday.
Viviana Rivera died at Serra Memorial Hospital shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday. The accident occured at 5 p.m. at Riverton Avenue and Arminta Street in Sun Valley.
The girl’s grandfather, who had just bought Viviana an ice cream cone, tried to grab her as she ran into the street, but the child was beyond his reach, Los Angeles police Sgt. Kenneth Staggs said.
Witnesses told police that the van, traveling south on Riverton Avenue, was unable to stop to avoid hitting the girl, Staggs said. The driver was not cited, police said.
