College Tennis : UCI Has Easy Day on Court

UC Irvine’s men’s tennis team defeated San Diego State, 9-0, at Irvine Tuesday. The 25th-ranked Anteaters improved to 26-11, and the Aztecs fell to 34-19.

In No. 1 singles, Bruce Man Song Hing defeated Ian McLaughlin, 6-4, 6-4. Man Song Hing is ranked 47th in the NCAA, and his individual match record is 24-13. In No. 2 singles, Ken Derr beat Larry Lindsey, 6-3, 6-0. In No. 3 singles, Darren Yates defeated Donny Young, 7-5, 6-0.

In No. 1 doubles, Julian Barhan and Yates defeated McLaughlin and Lance Lareau, 7-6, 6-4. No. 2 doubles, Irvine’s Rob Hinkel and Neil Amor defeated Young and Eric Crabb, 7-5, 5-7, 6-1.

In other college tennis action:

Chapman 9, Cal State Northridge 0--The third-ranked Panthers defeated the Matadors in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. match at Chapman Tuesday.

John Soldat, playing No. 3 singles for Chapman, won his 22nd straight regular season conference match in three years. His individual record is 27-1.

In No. 1 singles for Chapman, Troy Turnbull, the nation’s third-ranked Division 2 singles player, defeated Bill Johnson, 6-3, 6-1. Terry Davis defeated Pierre Marchchal, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6, getting the win on a service ace in the tiebreaker at 8-6.

Chapman’s top doubles team of Turnbull and Davis defeated Johnson and Marchchal, 7-6, 6-4.

The Panthers are 8-2 in conference and 18-12 overall.
