College Baseball : Aztecs Lose to UTEP Again, 10-1

The San Diego State baseball team continued to struggle in Western Athletic Conference play Wednesday, dropping a 10-1 decision to Texas El Paso in El Paso.

The victory completed a four-game sweep for the Miners, who improved to 7-9 in WAC Southern Division play. The Aztecs, who are in last place, fell to 5-11 in the division.

Chris Gwynn got SDSU started quickly Wednesday with a leadoff home run off Jim Halley in the top of the first inning. But, after that, Halley (5-7) settled down and did not allow any Aztec runs, despite giving up 10 hits.

Meanwhile, UTEP rallied behind the hot bat of designated hitter Greg Walkup. Walkup, who hit three home runs in UTEP’s doubleheader sweep Tuesday, smacked a three-run homer in Wednesday’ game.

Aztec starter and loser Russ Elsberry lasted six innings and allowed the first six Miner runs.

Roger Smith had three hits, and Brad Goodwin collected two hits and three RBIs to lead UTEP’s 12-hit attack. Gwynn had two hits and Kirk Hansell had three to lead the Aztecs.

SDSU continues its road trip to Albuquerque with a Fridaydoubleheader against division-leading New Mexico.

Cal State Fullerton 9, United States International University 7--The Gulls led the defending NCAA Division 1 champions, 7-6, but the Titans rallied to score two runs in the eighth inning to win the nonconference game at Titan Field.
