Community College Baseball : Cypress Beats Saddleback in 10th

Brian Flatten hit a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning Tuesday to lift Cypress College past Saddleback, 5-3, in a South Coast Conference game played on the Chargers’ field at Cypress.

Tom Chavez, who had two hits in the game, had singled with two outs in the 10th and scored on Flatten’s shot to left field. It was Flatten’s second hit of the game.

Right-hander Bob Goodall, who relieved starter Howard Farwell in the fifth inning and allowed just one hit and struck out eight, earned the victory, as Cypress improved to 11-8 in conference and 21-11 overall. The Gauchos fell to 8-12 in the SCC. In other South Coast Conference action:

Orange Coast 10, Golden West 1--Dave Rolland and Gene Roumimper hit home runs to pace the Pirates. Orange Coast scored its first runs when Rolland hit a three-run homer in the first inning. Roumimper’s two-run home run was in the fourth.

It was Roumimper’s 11th homer of the season leaving him one short of Kevin Reimer’s record of 12. Longo Garcia (4-5) struck out nine and got the the win.

Santa Ana 7, Cerritos 4 (nine innings)--The Dons scored four runs in the ninth to pull out a victory over conference champion Cerritos. Designated hitter Ruben Gonzales set a Santa Ana season record for runs batted in when he got his 49th in the fifth.

Winning pitcher Mike Schwabe (10-5) struck out four, walked two and allowed eight hits. Don first baseman Mike Linsten was 3 for 5. Right fielder Doug Maher was 2 for 4 with one RBI.
