San Diego Track : Crawford Sets Metro Conference Records in Discus, Shot

Southwest High School’s Tracy Crawford set Metro Conference meet records Thursday in the girls’ shot put and discus finals at the Metro South Bay League finals at Southwestern College. Crawford, the county leader in the discus, threw the discus 140-feet 1-inch and the shot 39-9 1/2. Southwest sophomore Latonya Canada tied the Metro South Bay meet record in the girls’ long jump at 16-3.

Judd Rachow of Hilltop was a double winner Thursday, clearing 6-0 in the high jump and 42-0 in the triple jump. Southwest’s Tim Tomlinson won the discus at 119-3 and Victor Martinez of Hilltop won the shot put (44-1).

In the Metro Mesa finals, also at Southwestern College, Montgomery athletes won eight of the 11 field event finals. Montgomery’s Maurene Maher won the girls’ long jump (15-6) and triple jump (33-10) and teammate Glen Destaciamento won the boys’ long jump (20-6 3/4), triple jump (42-3 1/2) and high jump (5-10).

In today’s league meets:

Metro Conference--South Hilltop’s Ellis del Sol will take his county best times in the 1,600 and 3,200 to the finals at Southwestern College, which begin at 3 p.m. Others to watch include Southwest’s Vickie Williams in the girls’ 100 and 200 and Southwest’s Miriam White in the girls’ 400.

Palomar League--Fallbrook’s Mike Robinson will lead a talented group at 2:30 p.m. today at Mira Costa College. Robinson will be favored in the 100 and 400 and will anchor Fallbrook’s 400 and 1,600 relay teams. Others to watch include San Dieguito hurdler Travis Knox, Mount Carmel pole vaulters Scott Johnston, Eric Bean and Steve Whitton, Fallbrook’s county-leading pole vaulter Sean Hickey, Mount Carmel’s Lesley Noll in the girls 400 and 800 and Vista’s Robin Eager in the 1,600.

City Conference--Patrick Henry sprinter Mike Conway and Morse sprinter John Denny will head a list of athletes competing in the City Conference finals, in which the City West, City East and City Central Leagues will compete at 1 p.m. at Balboa Stadium. Others to watch include Serra’s Jeff Haux in the 800 and teammate Joe Bowser in the shot put. Morse’s April Freow in the girls’s 100 and 200, University City’s Laura Chapel in the 800 and mile and Saint Augustine hurdler Jay Taylor.

Grossmont League--Grossmont’s Darcy Arreola, one of the top girls’ distance runners in the state, will run the 880, mile and two mile in the finals at 4 p.m. at Granite Hills High. Grossmont hurdler Dana Copeland, Valhalla distance runner Mark Dani and teammate Kim Reed, a high jumper, will be others to watch.
