Southern Section 4-A Tennis : Edison Gets Win in the First Round

Sunset League champion Edison High School opened the boys’ Southern Section 4-A tennis tournament with an easy, 26-2 first-round victory over San Gorgonio at Edison Tuesday.

Edison’s No. 1 doubles team of Borne Busch and Gary McCartan led the way for the Chargers by easily winning their match, 6-1, 6-1. Edison entered the tournament as the top-seeded team from the Sunset League, while San Gorgonio was the third-place entry from the Citrus Belt League.

With the victory, Edison improved its record to 19-2 and will face Rolling Hills at Rolling Hills Friday afternoon in second-round play.

In other 4-A tournament action:

University 25, Long Beach Jordan 3--The Trojans’ No. 1 singles player, Carsten Hoffman, and No. 3 singles player, Gary Henderson, swept their matches to pace the Trojans’ first-round, home-court victory. University improved its record to 20-1 and will meet Foothill Friday in a second-round game at a site to be determined today.

Foothill 21 1/2, Riverside Poly 6 1/2--The Knights routed the Bears in a first-round match at Foothill and advance to meet University on Friday. Foothill improved its record to 17-3.

In 3-A action:

Katella 14, Los Amigos 14--The match at Los Amigos ended in a tie, but Katella (16-6) gained the victory on total games won, 106-92. The Knights’ Azhik Batel won all four of his singles matches to improve his record to 64-0, and Owen Tatsuta won his four matches to improve his record to 69-3.

Capistrano Valley 22, Hacienda Heights Wilson 6--The Cougars did not lose a set in singles play, earning 16 points there en route to a rout of Wilson at Wilson. Capistrano Valley improved its record to 17-4.

La Quinta 15 1/2, El Dorado 12 1/2--The Aztecs squeezed by the Golden Hawks in a match at La Quinta to advance to Friday’s second round. La Quinta improved its record to 17-3, while El Dorado finished the season at 16-4.

In 2-A action:

Valencia 21, La Serna 7--The Tigers swept the doubles, and No. 1 singles player Jimmy Fox won all four of his matches in an easy, first-round win at Valencia. The Tigers, who advance to Friday’s second-round play, improved their record to 18-3.
