The Southern Section all-division high school track and field championships will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.

Team titles will be at stake in the 4-A, 3-A, 2-A and 1-A divisions for both boys and girls. The top eight performers in each event, regardless of division, will advance to the Masters Meet at Mt. SAC next week.

In the 4-A, Hawthorne High School should have little trouble in winning the boys’ team title and is in contention with Muir High for the girls’ title.

Katella High, led by junior hurdler-sprinter Terry Johnson; Duarte High, with sophomore sprinter David Cannady, and Ganesha High of Pomona, with hurdler Kenny Hall, each are strong title contenders in the boys’ 3-A division.

Sophomore Janeene Vickers of Pomona is favored in the 200, 400 and 100 low hurdles, and could lead the Red Devils to the girls’ 3-A title.

The battle for the boys’ 2-A title is wide open, with Centennial, Temple City, Western and Serra all in contention. Arroyo Grande is a solid choice to win the girls’ 2-A championship.

Cabrillo High of Lompoc has moved from the 2-A to the 1-A division and it has an excellent chance to take the boys’ title.

Santa Ynez High and St. Joseph of Santa Maria are co-favored in the girls’ 1-A.

The City track and field semifinals, with Danny Everett of Fairfax in the boys’ 200 and 400 and Locke’s Choo Choo Knighten in the girls’ 100, 200 and 100 low hurdles, are scheduled Friday at Birmingham High. Field events begin at 2:30 p.m., running events at 4:30.
